-On the narrow road-

You have not come to a mountain that can be touched

and that is burning with fire;

to darkness, gloom, and storm;

to a trumpet blast or to such a voice speaking words

that those who heard it begged that no further

word be spoken to them,

because they could not bear what was commanded;

“If even an animal touches the mountain,

it must be stoned.”

Hebrews 12:18-20

There is a great contrast in the way people approached God under the old covenant and how people approach God under the new covenant.  When God established the old covenant on Mount Sinai, the people experienced the terror of God.  The Israelites saw God’s awesome power demonstrated; they had to stand at a distance from the mountain.  Only Moses was allowed to go up the mountain when he received the Ten Commandments.  Under the new covenant, because of what Christ has done, Christians can enter directly into the presence of God without fear.  Christ has made it possible to commune intimately with God the Father because he has secured the forgiveness of sin for anyone who chooses to follow Him.  Let us come boldly before God on the basis of Christ’s shed blood.

Commentary from: The One Year NIV Devotional New Testament-October 30, Tyndale, 2003.

  1. “Well, they’ll stone ya when you’re trying to be so good

    They’ll stone ya just a-like they said they would

    They’ll stone ya when you’re tryin’ to go home

    Then they’ll stone ya when you’re there all alone

    But I would not feel so all alone

    Everybody must get stoned” — Dylan

  2. This is GREAT!!! I think too many people feel that they can’t just talk to GOD directly. Some religions even promote that thought…sad 😦 GOD wants us to talk to HIM. I think we can think that GOD thinks (that’s a lot of thinking…lol) I am the only person that exists. That’s a hard concept for “humans” to wrap their brain around, but I believe it. If I were the only human to ever exist, CHRIST would have still died for just me, or you! We are all important to GOD and when we humans realize this, that GOD loves each and every one of us, individually, we can accept what HE wants you or me to do…that is Love HIM…obey HIM…honor HIM.

    Getting a little emotional here…but GOD just is. And I have to accept that HE loves me. I think that’s a hard concept for most people to really understand…to accept that each one of us is just as important as the other. I don’t have to be the Pope or Billy Graham or the Apostle Paul…for GOD to love me more or as much. HE is no respecter of persons…we are all equally important in HIS sight, and we can all come to HIM on our own…

    I got a little wordy here, but I think it’s important…and you made this point…that we don’t need someone else to talk to GOD for us…HE is listening to me…and you…and everyone else that is talking to HIM.
